Projects

Connect Guelph is a project I started in April 2011.

Clubs/Organizations

The primary purpose of this organization is to raise awareness of accounting professions and to support students who are interested in pursuing any of the three accounting designations (CGA, CMA, CA). The ASG is committed to helping University of Guelph students excel in the accounting subject area by offering tutoring and exam bank services, as well as various professional events, activities, and information sessions that will benefit students.

During my 2nd year of university I took on the role of Events Coordinator where I was responsible for organizing and overseeing all the events held by the ASG. I organized and budgeted for the various information sessions, professional events and activities including our College Royal business game that won 2nd place! Throughout the year I also hosted many accounting review sessions for up to 400 students at a time and generated positive feedback from the students and professors.

This year I have been given the role of Director of Technology, being in charge of the website, social media and the member database. I will continue to work with The Accounting Society of Guelph to raise recognition among accounting firms and gain a professional reputation for our school and members.

The Canadian Undergraduate Technology Conference 2011 was the world’s largest student technology conference with 600 people in attendance, 8 keynotes, 5 industry driven competitions. The 2 day conference brought together the brightest students from across Canada to interact with technology in ways that school can’t. The CUTC prides itself on being able to give delegates more practical knowledge in 2 days than in a month’s worth of school.

As a Universty of Guelph Ambassador for the CUTC, I rigorously promoted the conference using various social media outlets.  As a result I was able to increase delegate attendance from the University of  Guelph by nearly 50% from the previous year. Being part of the Logistics Team, I also helped plan and coordinate the logistics of the conference. Despite the fact that there were over 600 people at the conference, everything flowed very smoothly and the team generated very positive feedback from the delegates.

Conferences/Competitions

The Brock University Accounting Conference was a 3-day conference that included a case competition, keynote speakers, networking events and various other activities. Events and activities took place at both Niagara Falls and on the Brock University Campus

There were 17 teams taking place in the accounting case competition. The case was based on the transition from GAAPs to IFRS. It was specifically about Peller Estates Winery and their wish to switch financial reporting standards. Each team was isolated into rooms and given 2 hours to analyize the case, prepare a solution and a presentation for a panel of 6 judges. The judges were all industry representatives from various accounting firms. They picked the top 3 teams to present their solution again but in front of everyone, including other delegates, coaches and professors.

The University of Guelph team was picked as 1 of the 3 finalists to move on to the next round and we presented our solution again to everyone. In the end we placed 3rd overall and it was a really good experience. I networked and met many interested people and hope to keep in touch with them throughout my career. At the end of the day I feel that we made our school’s emerging accounting program more recognized and established a credible name for our school.

The ICAO Cash Competition is unlike any other accounting competition out there. Rather than testing students’ technical accounting skills, this competition focuses more on their soft skills such as teamwork, negotiating, time management and relationship building. The competition is a great opportunity to meet with industry representatives, ICAO officials and accounting students from accross the country.

I was selected as the Team Leader to guide the University of Guelph team at the competition. Although we didn’t place in the competition, it was a great learning experience for us, and we networked with many interesting people. It was the first the first year that the University of Guelph sent a team to the competition, so I was very happy to represent Guelph Accounting there for the first time.
